Verbs
Verbs are words used to describe an action, state or occurrence. They are especially useful for essays when you want to demonstrate the effect of a technique.

Affect | To have an effect on; make a difference to | ‘The heat began to affect my health.’ |
Analyse | To examine something in detail, typically in order to explain and interpret it | ‘We need to analyse the text more clearly.’ |
Authorise | To give official permission for or approval to | ‘The teacher had declined to authorise the visit to the park.’ |
Cause | To make something happen or exist; to be the cause of something | ‘He swerved and caused an accident.’ |
Demonstrate | To clearly show the existence of something by giving proof of evidence | ‘The use of metaphor hence demonstrates the character’s laziness.’ ‘He was trying to demonstrate how the accident occurred.’ |
Embody | To give form to; express, personify, or exemplify in concrete form | ‘He had begun to embody his father, who he had once scorned.’ ‘The personified mountain embodies the harshness of the land.’ |
Extinguish | To put out (i.e. a flame) To put an end to; destroy | ‘A person’s habits are hard to extinguish entirely.’ |
Highlight | To draw special attention to | ‘The issues were highlighted in the report.’ ‘The author’s use of persuasion highlights his bias point of view.’ |
Illustrate | To serve as an example of To provide (i.e. a newspaper) with images | ‘The long list illustrated his skill in organisation.’ |
Imply | To indicate or suggest without explicit statement | ‘Her apparent forgetfulness seemed to imply a lack of care.’ |
Infer | To conclude by reasoning rather than an explicit statement To hint or suggest | ‘From the use of exclamation marks, I could infer her excitement.’ |
Negotiate | To bring about by discussion To deal or bargain with others | ‘There were calls for the government to negotiate with other nations.’ |
Presume | To assume or suppose | ‘I presume you are tired from the long drive?’ |
Represent | To serve to express, stand for or symbolise something else | ‘The use of visual imagery here represents the character’s death.’ |
Thrive | To prosper or flourish | ‘Where there is a lack of hygiene, rats thrive.’ ‘He thrives to please his mother.’ |
Vicarious | To feel through the imagined experience of someone else To act in someone else’s place | ‘The advertisement brings vicarious pleasure in luxury living.’ |
Adjectives
Adjectives are words that describe something, often a noun. They are useful in both essays and creative writing pieces.

Copious | Large in number and quantity; abundant | ‘She consumed a copious amount of thriller books that summer.’ |
Declarative | Serving to declare, make known or explain | ‘He was making a declarative statement rather than a passive one.’ ‘The declarative sentence highlights a sense of passion.’ |
Empathetic | Understanding or sharing the feeling of others | ‘She talked to the tearful child in an empathetic manner.’ |
Gregarious | (of people) Fond of company; sociable (of animals) Living in a herd | ‘His gregarious nature attracted friends easily.’ |
Imaginative | Showing or having creativity or inventiveness Lacking truth; fanciful | ‘His paintings were an imaginative take on his hometown.’ ‘The imaginative world of Harry Potter has hooked millions of families.’ |
Imperative | Necessary or required; unavoidable | ‘“Stop!” He commanded in an imperative voice.’ |
Ingenious | Clever, original and inventive | ‘His ingenious design rocked the industry.’ |
Meandering | Following a long-winded course | ‘His meandering voice never failed to put his students to sleep.’ |
Obtuse | Insensitive or slow to understand | ‘He often wondered if his sister was deliberately obtuse.’ |
Persuasive | Intended to persuade | ‘His passion made his argument all the more persuasive.’ |
Rambunctious | Difficult to control; wildly boisterous | ‘He was a rambunctious child.’ |
Scarce | Insufficient to meet demand; occurring in small numbers | ‘Meat was scarce during the war.’ |
Sensory | Relating to the senses or sensation; transmitted or perceived by the senses | ‘The lush rainforest was a sensory experience.’ |
Tranquil | Free from disturbance; calm | ‘Early mornings are the best for a tranquil stroll.’ |
