How Emelia Improved in HSC Maths by Learning How to Ask the Right Questions

Thinking about getting started with Art of Smart?

Michelle and her daughter Emelia (Year 11) have worked with Art of Smart for over 3.5 years for tutoring in Maths!

We recently chatted with Michelle who shared her experiences in working with Art of Smart and the impact it’s had for Emelia!

Prior to getting started with Art of Smart, what help was Emelia needing?

Emelia has always struggled with Maths. It’s her weakest subject, even throughout primary school! While at primary school they had a Maths group for help which was great for her, when she moved to high school this wasn’t available.

It takes Emelia a while to learn Maths and retain it, so when she started high school we thought tutoring might be a good idea!

How did you hear about Art of Smart?

We heard about Art of Smart through someone in our network! They said they worked with AOS and were happy and we checked out the website and liked what we saw.

We had tried Kumon prior to working with Art of Smart. Even though the concept was great, it wasn’t the right fit for Emelia.

Because we have 3 children and a 10 year age range, dragging our tribe out for tutoring, dancing etc is quite challenging! So we were looking for tutoring where you would come to our home as this was a big help!

So, I liked the fact that Art of Smart came to my home!

The recommendation from my friend was a key factor in our decision also. Sometimes you can see things on websites, but can’t be sure if it’s always true so this was a great way to know that you guys were good and could be trusted.

What was the moment in working with Art of Smart that you knew you’d made the right decision?

The moment happened pretty quickly! Emelia felt uncomfortable asking questions in school, and in tutoring she felt more confident to ask questions with her tutor. So I could hear her asking questions and Emelia was happier!

What have we done to help Emelia?

She’s developed more confidence to ask questions!

She is now more confident to ask a question over and over again and to adjust in her mind that it’s OK to ask questions! That it’s not problem and in fact that it’s a good thing!

What’s the best thing your tutor has done to support your Emelia?

Helen, our AOS coach, is full of encouragement and patience which is fantastic!

Emelia would receive a test result and say “Helen will be disappointed as I didn’t do that well” and then she would see Helen, and Helen would be so encouraging and positive! There has never been any put downs, or “You should have done this.”

Instead Helen has always been encouraging which was wonderful. Helen has been an awesome support for Emelia!
