Thinking about getting started with Art of Smart?
Maree and her son Michael (Year 12) have been working with Art of Smart for almost 4 and a half years!
We recently chatted to Maree who shared her experiences in working with Art of Smart and the impact it’s had for Michael for HSC Economics!
Prior to getting started with Art of Smart, what help was your Michael needing?
Initially we first got in touch because Michael had a lack of confidence in some of his academic areas – specifically Maths and English. The biggest challenge was that he didn’t know how to ask for help in a class.
Michael’s teachers always told us, “Michael is bright, but not working to his potential”.
A big part of this we believes was because he was shy and in the classroom setting he didn’t have the courage to ask for help. We thought tutoring would be an ideal thing for him to build on confidence, and ask questions in a 1-on-1 format.
How did you hear about Art of Smart?
A friend’s daughter was working with Art of Smart and they mentioned Art of Smart to us.
Our initial concern was that the 1-on-1 tutors are predominantly university students so we were concerned whether they would have the skill base, but it actually worked out the opposite!
We discovered that because they were young and had been through the HSC themselves they could more powerfully connect with Michael, and could share valid experiences which helped them relate to Michael more easily.
Why did you ultimately choose Art of Smart?
We could see that Michael’s confidence around his learning had dropped, so we were determined to do something about it.
Additionally, having tutor come to our house was fantastic as a parent. I felt more comfortable having a tutor in our house so I could hear what was happening and so I could also reinforce the key messages they were sharing with Michael during the week as well.
What was the moment in working with Art of Smart that you knew you’d made the right decision?
When we met Alec our Art of Smart coach and we saw the way he connected with Michael! Alec has been absolutely fantastic!
Alec has been a fantastic role model for Michael and has a great style. He’s helped Michael organised himself across all of his subjects and also helped Michael develop his confidence in his ability to tackle HSC Economics.
Michael is now coming in Top 5 in Business Studies and Economics! In a couple of exams he also topped his class which was fantastic!
Working with Alec and his confidence and results in Economics and Business Studies at school has ignited his passion to go for early entry Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business for which he recently received an Early Entry Offer at University of Wollongong!
Alec ignited this enthusiasm in Michael to explore that this could be a possibility. He didn’t have an idea of what he wanted to do at university, and from working with Alec he has been inspired!
What have we done to help Michael?
Overall Alec has helped give Michael direction.
Art of Smart and Alec came on board when Michael was 16 to 17 years old when he was trying to work stuff out for life after school, so it’s been fantastic to have a mentor and role model to guide and inspire him in this.
What’s the best thing your tutor has done to support Michael?
The best thing that Alec has done is helped Michael rediscover his confidence and belief that you can do it and that you can learn if you keep yourself structured, and set up a study plan.
