Lynda and her son Jason (Year 11), and daughter Ann-Marie (Year 9) have been working with Art of Smart for just under 1 year across Maths and English. We recently chatted to Lynda who shared her experiences in working with Art of Smart and the impact it’s had for both Ann-Marie and Jason!
Prior to getting started with Art of Smart, what help was your Jason and Ann-Marie needing?
We discovered Ann-Marie had gaps in her Maths knowledge. I’d read that with Maths, when people get 80% right, they think “Great, I’ve done really well” but what this actually means is that you got 20% wrong.
When you continue to get 80% each topic over a year this becomes cumulative so that by the time you get to HSC, it means you’ve got huge gaps! We wanted to bridge those gaps in Year 9 before they widened.
Ann-Marie also didn’t have a good grounding in essay structures and we wanted to get targeted help for this! It was about sorting these out to get support so she could then work independently again!
For Jason, English has always been a challenge! Jason is someone that simplifies things, but in English you need to do the exact opposite! You need to elaborate and expand! He needed help in learning how to do this process so we sought out some help!
How did you hear about Art of Smart?
Our Careers Advisor at school had heard Rowan Kunz (CEO and founder of Art of Smart) present a keynote at a NSW Careers Counsellors Conference on the impact digital disruption was having for careers and what this means for high school students.
She had included information on this in our school newsletter and I called her to speak to her about it and then researched on the internet and discovered Rowan had started Art of Smart Education!
Why did you ultimately choose Art of Smart?
I loved the philosophy that Art of Smart Education has – it was exactly what I was looking for!
Additionally, I also loved that I was not locked into a contract. We have the flexibility to get the help we need, when we need it!
What was the moment in working with Art of Smart that you knew you’d made the right decision?
Right from the beginning and our first interactions with the Art of Smart team! Our coaches Alex and Angelyn have been dedicated, on time and passionate!
If they ever were running late, they’d have fantastic communication about it (as it can be unavoidable!). It’s also been really appreciated that they’ve been flexible to accommodate changes in our schedules as well!
What did Alex and Angelyn do to help Jason and Ann-Marie?
Angelyn is such a bouncy, lovely person to have around and she makes learning fun for Ann-Marie! Angelyn is a very, very hard worker and sets high expectations for Ann-Marie.
She’s got Ann-Marie working on her essay structure and she’s now got a clear structure she can use all the way up to her HSC which is going to be brilliant! Angelyn has been so dedicated – she was in a car accident and still turned up for classes!
Jason is less communicative but when he’s quiet it means things are going well! Alex has been fantastic, and even now that he’s going away on exchange, he offered to continue to look over Jason’s work in the lead up to his exams!
What’s the best thing your tutor has done to support your child?
Both Angelyn and Alex are incredible role models for my kids!
