Often tutoring is seen as a casual gig you do while at university that provides little opportunity for further employment.
Oh, how wrong this assumption is!
Meet Hannah: She studied a Bachelor of Data Science and Decisions at the University of New South Wales and has worked at Art of Smart for over 4 years!
Through the skills that she developed at Art of Smart, she was capable of acquiring an awesome new job at Quantium, a prominent data science and artificial intelligence company.
Want to find out how?
Let’s hear from Hannah herself:
What will your job at Quantium entail?
I’ll be working in data analysis which is great because it’s very relevant to my degree.
Quantium helps provide solutions to companies facing specific data problems that they can’t solve themselves.
My work will most likely involve product development and dealing with clients. Luckily, I’ve had to deal with a lot of clients at Art of Smart in the form of students and parents!
How did working at Art of Smart help you get this new role?
The thing is, Art of Smart is a job that really stands out on your resume.
If you put down extra jobs you’ve completed, workshops you’ve attended or accolades you’ve received (such as a Coach of the Month award), employers are going to notice!
The great thing is, there are so many opportunities to build up these extra achievements at Art of Smart.
Throughout her time at AOS, Hannah attended numerous beneficial workshops such as a Resource Design Intensive and sessions created to improve ones tutoring ability.
Working at Art of Smart also helped me a lot with the practical side of a job interview!
As your communication skills improve throughout your tutoring sessions, you become further capable of communicating your ideas and worth to employers.
Tutoring is also a great topic of conversation during an interview as it conveys a level of passion, dedication, and interpersonal connection.
What sort of skills did you develop at Art of Smart?
These are just some of the skills strengthened by my time at AOS:
- Time management
In particular, a level of commitment and dedication is developed by working at Art of Smart as compared to other jobs.
This is because you’re committed to another person (your student) rather than a company. It leads to the development of a professional mindset, as you are far more inclined to plan ahead and engage with the task at hand while you’re working.
For someone starting their first job, this is the perfect little push to get you used to work-life.
What specific skills have you learnt that you’ll use in your new job at Quantium?
Just like my students, every client I work with at Quantium will be different.
Specifically, when it comes to data science, I’ll need to communicate complex ideas to someone at any level of understanding.
Like in tutoring, I’ll have to be skilled at communicating with someone who knows less than me about a topic.
How can other coaches make the best use of their time with AOS to develop their skills?
So there are two main things I recommend:
- Take on extra roles: Whether it be as a resource designer, blogger or something else, Art of Smart offers so many great extra roles outside of tutoring that can help you develop your desired skills.
- Take advantage of workshops: These will help you not only with tutoring but also with your career skills. Art of Smart will show you how to develop your personal branding, networking and actively help you receive further employment.
