Core Units for this Degree

Foundation Business Knowledge

In your first semester, you’ll gain an overview of the different business disciplines! Although this is a specialised Marketing degree, it’s definitely helpful to still have an understanding of the other areas of business.

There’s Accounting for Managers which is an introductory unit to teach you the basics (don’t worry, this subject is basically for non-accountants so you’re not expected to know very much when you start). You’ll learn about financial statements and various issues within the business world.

In Microeconomics, you’ll learn basic economics and how it can be applied to everyday life while Business Statistics is all about being able to understand and communicate big data (Excel will become your best friend).

In the subject, Introduction to Management, you’ll learn what it takes to be a good manager and all about different management practices.

Marketing Specialist Discipline Knowledge

Now, these subjects are all marketing-focussed! In Marketing Theory and Practice, you’ll learn about all the different theories and frameworks of marketing, how marketing relates to the other business disciplines and how to develop marketing strategies.

Marketing Planning and Implementation is much like it sounds — all about effective planning and implementing strategies to reach a certain goal. In this subject, you’ll work in groups to develop a marketing plan!

Marketing Decision Analysis involves using data to make big business decisions so you’ll learn about marketing analytics and how data can be used to help you make those decisions!

In Marketing Insights, you’ll develop your research skills and learn how to analyse information to help you forecast trends to better develop marketing strategies.

For more information about the other Marketing subjects, have a look here under the section, Part B: Specialist discipline knowledge!

Capstone

In your final year, you’ll complete a capstone unit called Strategic Marketing! This subject is where you get to put everything you’ve learnt into practice and is a great hands-on subject as you get to come up with and implement a marketing strategy to solve a problem that you have identified in the case study.

Electives

You get to choose 8 electives! Now, you can do any subjects across the university — as long as you meet the prerequisites, so it’s fairly flexible which is always good!

Internships

While completing an internship is not a requirement for the degree, there is the possibility to do one if you want to. There’s a specific Marketing Internship unit that you can choose to complete and Monash can help you organise it!

It’s always a plus when practical experience counts towards your degree! There’s no doubt that internships are always a good idea because they let you get a bit of experience before you graduate and you get to see what the work environment is like.

Travel Opportunities

Yes — it is possible to spend a semester abroad with this degree! To be eligible, you’ll have to make sure that you have a minimum WAM (weighted average mark) of 60.

If you’re worried about costs while studying abroad, you should check out the Monash Abroad Travel Grant!

You will need to have completed Units 3 & 4 of either English (EAL) with a score of 27 or English (Other) with a score of 25.

There’s also a bit more mathematics involved in the degree than you would expect so you need to have also completed Units 3 & 4 of Mathematical methods (any) with a score of 22 or Specialist Mathematics with a score of 22 or Further Mathematics with a score of 25.

What’s the Teaching Format?

A Bachelor of Marketing at Monash combines lectures, tutorials and workshops. You’ll complete the degree through semesters and take four subjects each semester on a full-time load.

Class Structure

Monash Marketing - Class Structure

Lectures

So, you won’t have a lecture for every subject and towards the end of your degree — there aren’t so many because the content is more focussed on building on what you’ve already learnt in previous classes. However, when you do have a lecture on campus for a subject, they usually go for 1.5 hours and have about 50 people in them (of course, the number of people attending starts to decline towards the end of the semester).

For some subjects, you would watch a video lecture online and then complete a quiz before coming to class — so it’s more like preparation for the class.

Tutorials

The tutorials go for 1.5 hours and have around 20 people in them. In the tutorials, you’ll revise the content for that week with the tutor. These classes aren’t as interactive as the workshops and are more teacher-led.

Workshops

Now, the workshops are just like being back in high school! You sit in groups and have class discussions, they’re very interactive and more student-led.

You’ll complete different group activities and of course, have time to ask the tutor any questions! Workshops can be up to 3 hours (don’t worry you’ll get a break in between) and there are around 20 people in each one.

How many hours do you spend at uni?

You’ll take four subjects a semester if you decide to study a Bachelor of Marketing at Monash full-time.

So, you can expect around 10 contact hours a week (give or take because it really depends on the classes). Then, you’ve got to factor in assessment preparation on top of that!

What are the assessments like?

In terms of assessments, each subject is slightly different so it really depends! For those first-year business subjects where you’re introduced to a range of business disciplines (accounting, statistics, economics etc.), you’ll have an exam!

For a fair few of the Marketing subjects, you’ll have to individually complete an online quiz each week after the lectures and also complete a quiz in the classroom with the people on your table. These quizzes are worth about 10% each, so they’re easy marks and it’s a good way to stay on top of all the content!

You also have to write reports, so you’ll get a case study, have to analyse the information and write your findings up or do a calculation.

Skills That You Refine and Learn

Monash Marketing - Skills

There’s no doubt that you’ll refine your communication skills with report writing and class discussions. You’ll also further develop your research skills when you come to analyse different case studies and have to make an evaluation.

If you aren’t already, you’ll learn how to be a creative thinker because in Marketing, you have to think outside the box when it comes to developing a strategy or finding a solution. You’ll learn how to work well in a team and communicate effectively to reach a shared goal as there are a few group assignments and you also have to complete those quizzes each week together!

You’ll also gain basic knowledge in the business disciplines of accounting, statistics, economics and of course, all the different areas of Marketing!

What’s the Faculty and Culture Like?

Well, the cohort as a whole isn’t super close-knit (say, like science!) because every class has different people in it. That being said, if you want to make good friends and put the effort in, you won’t have a problem at all! You can even organise with your friends to be in the same classes when you do your uni timetabling.

The lecturers and tutors really try to help you on a personal level. A lot of them are happy to put time aside to go through any questions or content and really try to support you. It’s a very positive learning environment.

Monash Marketing Students’ Society

It’s worth checking out the Monash Marketing Students’ Society (MMSS) because they offer wonderful social events and networking opportunities! There’s industry insight evenings, the annual MMSS White Ball and corporate cocktail events — just to name a few.

Business School Industry and Alumni Mentoring

There is a great program which matches final year students with business professionals/alumni (depending on your goals/where you want to end up). So, they act as your mentor and you have the chance to talk with them one-on-one, learn from them and work together towards achieving your goals.

It’s a 12-week program which takes place during both semesters and to be eligible for it, you have to have a WAM of at least 70!
