Why should you study a Business degree at Monash?

A Bachelor of Business at Monash is a broad degree that provides you with tons of opportunities to explore different avenues of business and build an awareness of what the industry is like. There is a wide array of career paths to follow, and you have the flexibility to choose what you would like to specialise in from 12 majors on offer!

Before coming to study this degree, I didn’t know how I would be able to get into the Big Four, or what the corporate world would be like. I think this degree really helped me understand that,” said Ahmad.

Top 3 Pros of a Business degree

#1: Networking

Networking is an essential part of the business world for finding new opportunities, learning new business techniques and landing jobs.

At Monash, a great way to network comes in the forms of joining academic clubs and societies, such as the Business and Commerce Student Society and Monash Accounting Students’ Association.

#2: Broad worldview

One of the key expectations of a business graduate is that they will be an ethical global citizen who has cross cultural competence. A Business degree equips you with a broader understanding of the globalised world and provides an international perspective to guide decision-making.

#3: Diversity of subjects

To help you develop your expertise, Monash allows students to explore a number of different business disciplines through core units and electives before finalising their major choice. With subjects like Marketing Theory and Practice, Microeconomics and Business Statistics, you get to experience a taste of the multiple pathways of Business before choosing your favourite.

Ahmad said, “You have the opportunity to have access to lots of different subjects and meet a diverse range of people from different cultural and academic backgrounds.”

Top 3 Cons of a Business degree

#1: Too vague

A consequence of a Business degree being so broad means that it can be quite vague when it comes to specific career prospects.

Sometimes the majors feel like gimmicks because even though I did Business Law, I can’t become a lawyer. I would have liked to have known that from the start,” Ahmad said.

#2: Expensive

“For a basic Bachelor of Business, it’s way too expensive considering that most of this information is available online,” Ahmad pointed out.

With a regular 3-year Business degree at Monash totalling at $41K, the cost is more than bound to cause a dent in your pocket!

#3: Monash doesn’t add weightage to resume

Although Monash is in the Group of Eight as one of Australia’s leading universities, Ahmad shares his doubt on its reputation in adding to the value of career prospects.

I’m yet to see how going to Monash actually stands out. I think that I would have had a similar experience studying a Bachelor of Business at other unis.”

Any regrets?

One of Ahmad’s regrets of studying a Bachelor of Business was his decision to do all his core subjects at the beginning of his degree.

“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done Business Law or Accounting. I did all of my Accounting subjects too early, and when I thought that Accounting was something that I wouldn’t like to do, Business Law was the only next option that I could take because there were a lot of subjects overlapping between those majors.

If there was a key piece of advice that Ahmad would like future students to know, it’s that a good mix of electives and core subjects at the start of your degree is the best way to gain a good sense of what you would like to do for your career.

What do you wish you had known before starting Business at Monash?

Monash Business - Quote

While making friends at uni can seem like a daunting experience, there are tons of ways that you can make new friends by involving yourself in campus life, attending events and joining societies with like-minded people. If you’re looking for support from Business students, you can join the Business School Peer Mentoring program to connect with older students for tips and tricks for crashing uni life.

What makes this degree different from the ones offered at other universities?

The international study options and the opportunities to travel interstate on all expense paid trips were really great, and I also really liked the Monash campuses,” Ahmad shared.

Monash offers fantastic opportunities for Business students to take their skills overseas and apply their knowledge in cross-cultural environments through a number of long and short-term exchange opportunities.

With five campuses in Australia, Monash is known for their trendy and modern buildings, with natural-looking interiors and spacious outdoor spaces providing plenty of room for students to study and socialise.

What inspired you to choose Business at Monash?

For someone who doesn’t know what they want to do, it’s quite a good degree as there are a lot of different avenues to explore and you have lots of access to different types of subjects,” he said.

As Ahmad mentioned above, a Bachelor of Business is an incredibly broad degree and allows you to explore a range of different subject areas before settling on your favourite. There is something in it for everyone!
